Two Sessions Spotlight: China's carbon emission promises to bring new growth opportunities

2021-03-11

With China announcing ambitious goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, reducing China’s carbon footprint will no doubt be a huge undertaking in the future. Professor Tang Yao from Guanghua School of Management points out that places and industries that are resourceful in clean energy, based in high technology or covered by supportive fiscal policies can take the initiative.

The world is wowed by China’s determination to fight climate change: In a virtual address delivered to the UN General Assembly last September, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

Reducing China’s footprint is a huge undertaking. But time will prove it's worth the effort, not only in the sense of upgrading Chinese enterprises’ production model, but also in generating a new growth zone for foreign companies that are seeking to expand their business in China.

To meet the goal of CO2 peaks within a decade, Tang Yao, an associate professor at the Guanghua School of Management of Peking University, said places and industries that are resourceful in clean energy, based in high technology or covered by favoring fiscal polices can take the initiative.

Watch Prof. Tang delve into a topic that examines the relationship between humanity and nature in this exclusive interview with the People’s Daily.
