Summary of key achievements in 2020

1.Creating expertise in business management

Capacity building in scientific research

•More than 110 academic papers have been published or accepted in top domestic and international journals, ranking top among universities in Asia in terms of quantity and quality.

•We have also seen an increase in the quantity and quality of scientific research projects, with nearly 50 projects being declared. Out of which, 2 projects have been funded by the National Social Science Fund, including 1 key project; 12 projects have been funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, including 2 outstanding youth fund projects; 2 major projects have been funded by the National Natural Science Fund and 1 major project has been funded by the Ministry of Education.

•13 awards were won in the 8th Outstanding Achievement Award for Research in Institutions of Higher Learning (Humanities and Social Sciences), including 2 first prizes.

•QS ranking by disciplines: Ranked 23rd in the world in Accounting and Finance, 25th in Economics and Econometrics and 36th in Business and Management.

•More than 110 academic conferences have been held online or offline.

•In 2020, we have ranked first in terms of performance evaluations and research accomplishments among the Economics and Management departments in Peking University.

Guanghua Thought Leadership

•A total of 110 projects have been inaugurated in the first to third stages of Guanghua Thought Leadership.

•We have provided policy research to aid the decision-making of the central and local governments, with a focus on the challenging and pressing issues in reform and development. Also, we have conducted research on topics such as “The long-term goals in 2035 and outlook of 2050”, “Implementation trajectory and measures towards a system of factor-based market allocation”, “Innovating real estate finance: construction and development of the REITs market”, “Institutional changes and functional improvements of the Housing Provident Fund”, all with significant achievements.

•We have launched a series of courses on China, such as “Chinese Economy”, “Chinese Finance” and “Chinese Management”, as well as business management courses such as “China REITs Pilot Project”,and “Basics and Application of Financial Technology”.

•120 research briefs have been submitted to important decision-making departments, and 7 research briefs have been commented on by national leaders.

•Publication of books such as “A course on our national development strategy and macro-policy”, “Co-performance strategy” and “The Huawei Inspiration”.

•We have reviewed case studies on topics that are closely related to China, such as the development of Ningxia’s wine industry, digital transformation of enterprises, a brief overview of the Five-Year Plan, industrial interconnectivity, artificial intelligence, etc.

•We have published a series of research reports on REITs, the pattern of urban development, white papers and other policy achievements.

•Guanghua Thought Leadership is about to launch four research projects, covering topics such as digital infrastructure, the reform of state-owned enterprises, anti-monopoly measures, digital assets, agriculture, rural areas and farmers, medical health, financial innovation and supervision, total factor productivity and others.

Tapping on cross disciplinary advantages

•Our “Management Innovation” platform has completed 7 research cases and one policy advisory report. The convener of this platform is also the co-chairman of the 254th Session of the Shuangqing Forum, who is actively promoting the study of organizational research under the digital economy.

•Our “Artificial Intelligence and Social Sciences” platform, together with leading institutions and enterprises, has discussed the development of artificial intelligence technology and its application in retail, medical and other industries, having completed a total of 6 research cases.

•Our “Micro Big Data-based Applied Research” platform has built a data sharing platform, covering commonly used open data sets, domestic and foreign social survey data, Internet Index, etc.

Creating a bridge between academia and new business practices

•The first “Peking University Guanghua Case Forum" was successfully held online. The event was widely publicised by major media outlets and joined by more than 2.54 million online viewers.

•The number of cases being recorded in the Management Case Research Center of Peking University has grown exponentially, with more than 120 new cases added annually.

2. Cultivating business leaders

Training talents in Business Administration

•Innovative concepts and measures to reform business education were introduced at the 22nd Peking University Guanghua New Year Forum.

•Responding to the national regional development strategy, the Ruisi building of our Shenzhen Branch was officially unveiled on 15 November 2020.

Establishment of the Belt and Road Academy at Peking University

•We have established global cooperation with 15 top universities in 13 countries and regions, and launched the “Future Leaders” international undergraduate program.

•In Fall 2020, 36 students from 12 countries and regions, including China, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Israel, Canada, Brazil, Poland, Mexico and South Korea, have been enrolled in this program. They will study both online and offline, taking major requirements and electives such as “Chinese Economy”, “Chinese Management” and “Cross-cultural Management”.

•The 2nd edition of the “Future Leaders" program has enrolled 47 students, including 39 international students from Warsaw University in Poland, University of Mannheim in Germany, ESSEC Business School in France, Erasmus University in the Netherlands, Queen's University and York University in Canada, ESADE Business School in Spain, IE Business School in Spain, University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, Tel Aviv University in Israel and Bocconi University in Italy, representing 17 countries and regions.

Promoting international PhD programs

•In response to the Belt and Road Initiative, we have committed ourselves to internationalisation, also putting our outstanding young scholars through rigorous and systematic academic training.

•The first batch of students are expected to admitted into Peking University in 2021.

Actively responding to the pandemic situation and embracing the digital era

•In celebration of the 35th anniversary of our founding, our MBA program has launched a series of online activities through 35 days of live streaming.

•The “Guanghua Thought Leadership Platform Open Lecture” was launched online, obtaining 21 million views within 14 days.

•We have launched a series of courses to support small and medium-sized enterprises in collaboration with the All China Federation of Industry and Commerce and Alibaba Cloud. A total of more than 700 enterprises and 800 managers have since completed online learning.

•Since the establishment of our digital education centre, more than 200 online courses have been developed.

•Development of our very own “Digital Guanghua” app.

•Launch of our “Young Talents in the Digital Economy” project.

•Cooperation with World Bank to develop 25 MOOC courses on topics on China's economy, finance and management, presenting our in-depth research on China's development model to the world.

All-encompassing business education system

•We offer undergraduate and graduate programmes, as well as Master of Finance, Master of Business Analysis, MBA, Master of Social Welfare Management, Master of Accounting, Master of Audit, EMBA, international EMBA, Senior Management Education, Doctorate of Management joint training programme, as well as our digital education centre.

3. Promoting social progress

Providing suggestions on national development and economic recovery

•We have actively participated in the “Symposium with Experts and Entrepreneurs on the Economic Situation” chaired by Premier Li Keqiang, the CPPCC National Committee’s Economic Work Forum, and the National Development and Reform Commission’s Economic Situation Analysis Meeting, contributing as a think tank.

•Contributions to the 14th Five Year Plan. The report “Long-term goals of 2035 and outlook of 2050” also tackles the critical issues in the 14th Five Year Plan. Presently, Professor Liu Qiao and Professor Xu Xianping are also members of the Expert Committee on the 14th Five Year Plan.

•The paper “Implementation path and major measures towards a system of factor-based market allocation” put forward a series of effective policy suggestions. On April 9 2020, “Opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on the construction of a more complete system of factor-based market allocation” was officially announced.

•We have also focused on the study of rental housing in the 14th Five Year Plan. In order to push forth urbanization under the new development pattern, we have put forward suggestions in terms of a reform plan concerning the three areas of housing provident fund, rental housing and REITs.

•Actively promoting the construction of China's REITs market. 11 research reports have been released, demonstrating close participation in the pilot trials and document drafting process of the REITs public offering, providing suggestions to solve major problems in real estate finance.

•Guanghua Thought Leadership has released 18 research briefs related to pandemic curbing measures, aiding decision-making institutions, and submitted more than 40 internal references.

•Suggesting the implementation of consumption vouchers. The research team conducted empirical research on the distribution of consumption vouchers in Hangzhou and Guangxi, providing suggestions for boosting consumption and supporting small, medium and micro enterprises in the short term. Xinhua news agency, People's Daily, Guangming Daily, and other news agencies have reported on these findings, and the reading volume of hot topics on Weibo reached 150 million.

•The meeting “Analysis of economic situation in the pandemic era” was held online, providing insights on post-pandemic economic recovery, as well as pandemic prevention and control.

•The 22nd Guanghua New Year Forum was held, with a total of 6.82 million online viewers. The forum tackled issues mentioned in the 14th Five Year Plan and innovations in business education, providing suggestions for China's high-quality development,

Contributions in fighting against the pandemic

•Collaborative efforts with overseas universities and partners to fight the pandemic.

•According to known statistics, our alumni has donated more than 800 million yuan in donations and related materials, contributing to the front-line efforts in pandemic control.

Establishment of a joint centre between the National Bureau of Statistics and Peking University Data Development Centre

•The centre was officially opened on November 19, 2020.

Official establishment of “Guanghua Thought Leadership”

•The establishment of Guanghua Thought Leadership fully displays our expertise in the fields of economics and management, artificial intelligence and social sciences. Also, this initiative integrates academic and policy research resources both within and outside the university, hence combining the strength of enterprises, institutions and individuals to research on challenging and pressing issues affecting our economic and social development. Lastly, we have hosted academic and practical exchange activities at home and abroad, providing policy suggestions, and promoting business implementation research at the forefront.
